Service Area in Honduras
Our efforts focus on the country of Honduras, where a population of 7.5 million face economic, geographic, and social challenges that push many into poverty that is difficult to escape.
Each year trips are slightly different, but we always work in and around the two cities of La Esperanza, in the western central highlands, and San Lorenzo, near the southern coast.
La Esperanza
La Esperanza is found in the Department of Intibucá, and the drive from Tegucigalpa west and up into the mountains traverses some of the most beautiful landscape in Honduras. The area has a large population of indigenous people, called the Lenca, and because of the elevation temperatures here are generally milder than those found elsewhere. The Lenca are shy, friendly people and some of the poorest and most in need of medical care that we see.
San Lorenzo
San Lorenzo lies on Honduras’ short southern coast with access from the Gulf of Fonseca, nestled among mangrove trees. A great place to find fresh seafood, San Lorenzo is more “urban” than La Esperanza and many of the people there work in the seafood processing and packaging plants, with medical needs particular to that environment. Our trips to San Lorenzo also include a week near Orocuina, a drier, dustier, and rockier locale off the main highways. Reaching some of the villages is a challenge, as roads are miserable, and help explain the isolation and lack of care some of our patients face.
