Dental Hygiene
For years, Missoula Medical Aid sent dentists to Honduras as part of our medical brigades. Their services were essential, pulling decayed teeth that made everyday life miserable for rural Hondurans. Sometimes these strong-armed dentists pulled almost one hundred teeth a day.
Obviously, there was a need for preventative dentistry. Our volunteers wondered what we could do to make extractions less necessary.
We learned that modest funding could make a big difference, by supporting dental health fundamentals: basic check-ups and education. Our local partners ensure that our money goes a long way and our efforts are tailored to local practices and culture.

- For just $4,000 dollars a year, Missoula Medical Aid can pay the salary of a Honduran dentist to work three hours a day, five days a week in the La Esperanza Lion’s club clinic. This is a fully functional dental clinic for low income patients. The La Esperanza Lions Club provides the space, the equipment, and the management; we simply pay the Honduran dentist’s wages.
- For just $3,000 dollars, Missoula Medical Aid can provide 2,500 children with three toothbrushes, and three tubes of toothpaste during the course of a year. The children receive instruction on how and when to brush in their schools. They get calendars to fill out in order to reinforce the habit. These are the first generation of children in their communities to brush regularly, and by partnering with Save the Children and the Government of Honduras, our money goes a long way.
